New science emerging daily to tackle the environmental challenges facing the planet today will be showcased at the first-ever Abu Dhabi Science Festival, running till 26 November at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and on the Corniche.

Sustainability is one of the key focus areas of the Festival, which is delivering a number of experiences for children and families to discover how they can make a difference in preserving the planet.

The Festival offers various shows, interactive exhibits and workshops like “sustain-ability” and “Grasp Climate change”, to teach visitors of all ages about the science behind climate change and renewable energy. The Government of Abu Dhabi has made a significant investment in sustainability and alternative energy sources, and is playing a leading role in the global debate on these issues. Making children more interested in science, technology and innovation by explaining the science behind sustainability, renewable energy and climate change in simple yet fun ways will help Abu Dhabi develop its human capital base and encourage local community members to become more involved in their day-to-day lives.

Among the events focusing on sustainability is an interactive exhibit on hydroelectricity, wind, wave and solar power. The Festival’s shows will explore new technologies that are helping to make a difference, including bio fuels, renewable power and recycling, while also showing children practical measures they can follow. Budding scientists can take part in a workshop and make an early start to their science careers by assembling a wind turbine to generate electricity.

These “green” workshops, interactive exhibits and shows are among over 150 amazing science experiences delivered by the first-ever Abu Dhabi Science Festival at ADNEC and the Corniche. The Festival is an initiative of Abu Dhabi’s Technology Development Committee (TDC), and is aimed at sparking the curiosity of Abu Dhabi children in science, technology and innovation (STI).

Naifa Al Zoabi, Science Lab Technician at the Cambridge School said: “The students enjoyed the Festival immensely, and they have certainly benefited by the informative yet entertaining way the information was presented. The interactive exhibits helped them grasp the science and issues relating to climate change, especially how they can get involved and protect the environment. The Festival’s fun approach to science in the various workshops that were available helped the students learn about the science in a simple and fun way.”

The inaugural Abu Dhabi Science Festival opened at ADNEC on 18 November and on the Corniche on 19 November. The Festival will be open free of charge to the public between 16h00 to 21h00 on weekdays, and from 14h00 to 21h00 on the weekends at ADNEC. The Corniche events are open to the public between 17h00 and 22h00 on weekdays, and 14h00 and 22h00 on the weekends.

The Festival is presented by TDC and Tawazun in association with Dolphin Energy and in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) to support the Emirate’s long-term human capital development plans and as part of TDC’s mandate to help embed science, technology and innovation within the fabric of Abu Dhabi.
